COLREGS Software

A realistic, interactive program that will improve your knowledge of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea. Fully menu-driven - no instructions are needed.

Includes the full text of the Regulations:

can be brought to the screen by clicking on the tab.

Study sections show the lights or shapes for every vessel with the arcs of visibility and the appropriate section of the relevant Rule.

Test sections let you discover how much of this stuff you know. There is a 'fog signal' section that tests your knowledge of this subject and a 'flash card' section that tests you on every combination of lights and shapes.

BUOYAGE

Covers both Regions A and B and includes a map showing where the Regions apply. North America is Region B. For each Region, the study section provides the details of the buoy, its light characteristics and topmarks (if any), also its chart symbols and a chartlet showing the location where the buoy might be expected. You just click on the buoy's button and its details appear.

The study section shows either the buoy or its light and you select the answer from a choice of four.

The test section is just questions about buoyage and, again, you select your answer from four.

SIGNALS

Includes the International Code of Signals (Flags) and Morse Code (Flashing Light).

The Flashing Light speed can be varied from 1 to 25 words per minute and the size of the signal light can be adjusted. In the study section, you click on the letter (or number) and the letter and its characteristic will be shown while the light flashes the characteristic at whatever speed you have chosen.

In the 'single letter' test section, the computer will flash a randomly selected characteristic at the chosen speed and you click on the answer. You will be told right or wrong. The 'Group Test' section, the computer will transmit a group of five letters and/or numbers at the selected speed and you enter whatever you believe you read. The correct transmission will then appear on the screen for comparison. The transmission can be repeated if you want.

The International Code section includes the full set of flags, pendants and the substitutes. In the study section, each flag is shown with its name and single flag meaning. In the test section, the computer chooses the flag and you click on the answer.

There is also a section covering the distress signal.
